BMW reveals new X2 coupe-SUV with radical new look and up-to-date tech, plus hot M35i and fully electric iX2 variants

This is the new BMW X2, the latest addition to the German marque’s extensive SUV range. The new car replaces the outgoing model with an all-new coupe-SUV design that uses the latest BMW X1 as its base, a recipe already followed by the X5/X6 and X3/X4 siblings elsewhere in the range. Prices start at £39,395, with the iX2 priced from £56,540; deliveries begin in March 2024.

The car’s new look incorporates flared wheel arches, standard LED headlights, integrated door handles and that fashionable fastback roofline. Bold rear lights help set it apart from the X1 at the rear, while an optional illuminated grille can be specified. Inside, the modern cabin sports the latest generation of BMW’s class-leading infotainment spread across a curved display.

The X2 is 194mm longer than the car it replaces and 54mm longer than its X1 sibling. There’s an extra 22mm in the wheelbase, which in turn allows for 25mm of extra kneeroom in the rear seats. The sloping rear roofline means cargo space takes a dent, but there’s still 560 litres here – 90 more than the outgoing model. The car is also taller overall at 1,590mm, some 64mm over the old X2.

There are three versions to choose from: X2 sDrive20i M Sport, X2 M35i xDrive and iX2 xDrive30 M Sport. The entry-level car starts at £39,365 and is powered by a familiar 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder incorporating a 48V mild-hybrid system; the result is a total of 170hp, 280Nm of torque and combined fuel economy of up to 47.1mpg on the WLTP cycle.

A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is standard on both sDrive20i and M35i versions; the entry-level model is front-wheel drive, with the M35i and iX2 sending power to all four wheels. Adaptive M suspension is standard across the range.

The X2 M35i xDrive is the high-performance offering, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 300hp and 400Nm of torque. Performance is sprightly with 0-62mph sorted in 5.4 seconds.

Perhaps the most important addition to the range is the fully electric iX2 xDrive30, which shares its powertrain with the iX1 xDrive30. There’s 313hp on tap including a temporary boost function, with 494Nm of torque. Performance is more or less on par with the M35i version as a result, with a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds.

The car’s battery sports 64.8kWh of useable energy, which translates to a claimed range of 259 to 266 miles on a single charge. AC charging is supported up to 11kW as standard, or 22kW optionally; 130kW DC charging is supported, with charging from 10 to 80% completed in as little as 29 minutes on a compatible charger.
